Chapter 22 - Progress

Lightbeam’s Viewpoint

I returned to the Portia Hotel, ordered a bunch of pizzas, and watched a TV show while I waited. Mindblade sent a text to me saying that I needed to pick up a box of parts from an address on the far northeast part of the city. I shook my head; it was as if I were the stinking delivery service for the group now.

After the food was delivered, I looked up the address and flew to it with the stack of pizzas. It was some kind of lab building. Some guys in the garage noticed me and motioned to a large box on the table. It was heavy, and filled with a variety of tools, mechanical parts, rods, and tubes.

I nodded and placed the pizzas on top of the bigger box, carried the batch outside, and flew in a few beams of light back to the chop shop. The box was heavy.

Back at the chop shop, Dr. Savu and the alien stood over the table with one of the power units opened up in front of them. The pair drew diagrams on notepads, apparently making schematics for the power unit.

Shag clapped his huge, clawed hands and took the pizza boxes off the top. I gritted my teeth and debated putting a couple of laser holes in the back of his shorts. The monster man’s left arm was in far better shape now, and the white fur was beginning to regrow.

I placed the large box on the floor near the table. Dr. Savu nodded to me and tore it open immediately. Many of the parts were coils, tubes, cables, and boxes of parts. I moved over to the other supers and joined them in eating.

I asked, “So, those are supposed to get the guns operational?”

Mindblade nodded. “They needed the parts to connect the power unit to the cannon.”

“What are they drawing?”

“Plans for the weapons, so Dr. Savu can recreate them.”

“What do we need more guns for? We’ve got two of them now.”

“Nightmonger sells weapons. Something that powerful will sell extremely well on the black market.”

“Seems strange to sell weapons that are capable of hurting supers.”

“Not if he can make a billion on the way.”

“I guess.”

Arga’kor shifted to work on connecting the power core with one of the cannons, while Dr. Savu made notes.

I asked Shag, “You try any of the other guns yet?”

“No. I didn’t want to try them here. After we eat, I figured you could bring us to one of the waterways to test them.”

I nodded as I ate.

Arga’kor looked over at us and said, “The small devices are miniaturized black hole generators. Extremely dangerous weapons within a few feet of the device. The other weapon sends out a pulse that will overload electronic devices nearby, assuming they aren’t shielded against such a weapon.”

Shag stared at the alien frog-man. “Can they be re-used?”

“The pulse device can be utilized repeatedly. The grenades disappear ‘into’ the black hole.”

“Couldn’t something like that destroy the planet?”

“A micro-sized, unstable event is only dangerous for a second or two.
