AFTER A GLORIOUS NINETY-four minutes of Cary Grant stressing and Myrna Loy trying to get just the right shade of yellow for her dining room, I sat in one of the Pinecone’s cushy orange lobby chairs with Allie next to me in the other one. We both hunched close to her laptop.

“And that’s all you have to do to post on the website,” Allie said with a patient smile. I smiled back. Melanie had given me administrator permissions to do it, but so far I hadn’t been able to make it work.

“You make it look so easy,” I said, though honestly I had absolutely no confidence that I could upload my own post without her by my side telling me what to do. I didn’t want her to think she’d done a poor job explaining, though. I knew whose fault it was that I struggled with technology, and it wasn’t Allie’s. “Say, I have an idea.”

She turned back to her laptop. “I bet I can guess. You want to know how to add photos to your text. It’s really easy.”

“No,” I said, not sure I could sit through another demonstration that I knew would slide past my brain cells and get lost in the same place my high school math lessons had disappeared to. “But pictures are a great idea. What if I email you my articles and pictures and you post them to the Pinecone website?”

“You could, but if you just ...” Allie stopped and gave me a long look. I smiled my apology as she grasped what I was saying. “No problem, Stevie.”

I relaxed. “Thank you, Allie. You’re the best.”

“It’s true, I am,” she said in such an adorable way that I couldn’t help but love this girl. She put down her laptop and went behind the concessions counter. Her eyebrows raised, she asked, “Snacks?”

“Yes, please!”

A few minutes later, we were gathered back around her laptop, Junior Mints for me and Dots for Allie. I had my lighthouse calendar open on my lap, and Allie was ready to help me fill in the upcoming Matinee Classics schedule.

But first, I wanted to get to know this elfin-sized girl better. “I’ve noticed that you and Sam are close.”

Allie nodded sagely. “We are, but we aren’t a couple, if that’s what you’re asking.”

“No?”

She shook her head. “We are artistic partners. We produce an online comic strip.”

“An online comic strip? That’s very cool.” I’d suspected they were working on something during their downtime, but nothing so concrete.

“Sam is the creative director, and I am the artist.”

“By creative director you mean ...?”

“I mean he has ideas, and I draw them. Although most of his ideas are the episodic plot and punchlines. We work through a lot of the overall storyline together.”

Allie spent the next few minutes showing me their very impressive strip online starring a rather emo cat and her ADHD dog friend, both of whom had superpowers that the other didn’t know about. I was shocked to see they had a following of nearly twenty thousand viewers.
