Chapter Twenty-Seven

Merle walked back across the dirt road, turning in at their gate, and crossing the parallel shadows of the Italian cedars that lined the drive. The brush-off from Madame Naudé was disappointing. It stung to be dismissed by a neighbor when you arrived bearing baked goods. What was wrong with her? Wasn’t she French? Was she too busy, or just rude? Merle had seen her drive her red Range Rover through the gate just an hour before. She was home. So rude it was.

She blew out her frustration and vowed to let it go. Harmonie Naudé’s husband was about to go to trial and Pascal would testify against him. Maybe that’s all it was.

She paused to look down the vineyard rows. How was Philippe and his harvesting contraption doing? She listened for the sound of it but heard nothing. It must be at the far end of the vineyard. He’d returned with the replacement belt, fixed the harvester, and gone on his merry way, putt-putting down the rows. Pascal had helped him with tools but he was no mechanic. He mostly stayed out of the way.

Merle checked her phone again. No sign from Tristan or Stasia. She’d called her sister an hour before but it went to voicemail. Merle was frustrated with them both. Why couldn’t they be more considerate? Just a phone call wouldn’t kill them, would it? Damn them anyway.

Wherever they’d gone they should be back by dinner. That went without saying. So they had three or four hours to make their appearance, and their apologies. Stasia could do whatever she pleased. Her husband wasn’t here yet and there was only her little sister to complain. But her son? He was going to get an earful.
