After leaving the hospital, Zachary ran a few personal errands. He needed more groceries. Gas in the tank. All of the grown-up, adult things he was supposed to be doing to take care of himself. At the store, he had to stop himself from buying the things he normally got for Kenzie. She wasnât there anymore. There was no point in filling the fridge with the things that she liked if he wasnât going to consume them himself.
He was still thinking about her when he got home and shoved the newest frozen dinners into the freezer. When the phone rang, he knew without looking at it that it was going to be her. He didnât think the medical examinerâs report would be in yet, so he didnât know why she would call him when they were broken up. It probably wasnât her. He just thought of her when it rang because heâd already been missing her.
He pulled out his phone and looked at the screen. It was Kenzie. And from her cell phone, not the office. Zachary closed his eyes and took a couple of breaths before answering it.
âKenzie, hi!â He tried not to sound too eager. Or like her call was unexpected. He had wanted to stay friends with her, and friends called each other now and then. He couldnât expect too much from it. Even so, he wished he had bought the treats that she enjoyed from the grocery store, so he could tell her that they were there waiting for her now, whenever she was ready to come over.
âZachary. Yeah, hi.â She sounded down. Depressed? Or just tired after a long day? âUh⦠listen⦠I was a little harsh with you yesterday. More than harsh. That was unwarranted. Iâm sorry. You didnât do anything wrong, you just called to ask me a medical question and I jumped to conclusions.â
âI am sorry,â Zachary said. âIf I had a medical ethics question, then I should have just gone to the Ethics Committee to start with. I donât know why I didnât. I didnât need to bother you with something like that.â
âI donât want you to think that you canât still talk to me and ask me for advice. Really. Weâre not together anymore, but that doesnât mean that we canât ever talk to each other again.â
âThatâs good. I wouldnât want that.â
âMy family is sort of a sore spot with me. Especially my dad. So when you were talking about transplants, I just automatically got defensive.â
Zachary didnât say anything. If it was a sore spot, then asking her why would probably not be the right thing to do. She needed to know that he could just accept that it was off-limits.
âMy dad⦠our family has some history with transplants, and he and I donât see eye-to-eye. He thought that after I finished my medical degree, I would agree that he was right about everything, but⦠well⦠I donât.â
âOkay. I wonât ask you about it again. I didnât mean to trigger any bad feelings.
