Chapter ten

Tyr

The tone of Keira's voice has my attention. I was just about to remind her that Silco's room is the least likely place anyone will look for us, and we should be safe here for a while longer. However, from the sounds, whatever is under this bed is not just unsavory but abominable. I swing my legs over the edge of the bed and lower myself until I'm on my stomach on the maroon bedroom rug next to my Winter witch. Then I blanch.

"Fuck!"

"Exactly," Keira replies. "And I don't think she's unconscious."

"Silco, you bastard," I mutter through gritted teeth.

I reach out and draw an arm toward us to check the pulse, but already I sense death. Rowan is cold and magicless.

"But none of this makes any sense," says Keira, turning her big black eyes from the body to me.

Her hand searches for mine and clasps it. The look on her face appears as upset as my Summer insides are when confronted with death.

"How many dead people have you come in contact with?" I ask.

It's a stupid question. She's of Winter and shadows. Of course, she's used to seeing bodies.

"Two, Lorelei, and now Rowan."

I stare at her, astonished. She swallows again and gestures with her hand in a very Keira-like manner that I am fast becoming familiar with.

"Makes me nauseous. I told you; I don't kill."

"Not in the war?"

She shakes her head. "Using my death and Shadow magic, I mostly create magical artifacts to help protect and defend. Some Winter fae insisted I create weapons, and I did—a few, but I could feel every death they inflicted and so claimed they were faulty and asked for them back."

"You should definitely come live with me in Summer."

"If only I could, Tyr. But I'm Winter. Your court would hate me, and there is no way I'm letting my magic be drained from me or transformed into Summer magic."

"Why?"

"When I was young, I begged Lorelei to change my magic into a normal Winter magic, that of ice, sleep, and dreams. She gave me every old book and new scroll that she could find in our substantial library and demanded I do the research first before I tried anything. She already knew I would not persevere with the idea once I began reading on the subject. To strip one's magic from a fae changes us and our personalities. Our magic comes from our soul. I don't understand why my soul has an affinity for death when it makes me feel so sick, but my shadows and darkness are very much me."

As we lie on our stomachs, still naked, and look at the dead Spring vizier, I wrap an arm around Keira's shoulders and pull her into my side. I steal another kiss from her sweet licorice lips. Should I tell her my grand plan? The more I discover about Keira, the more I adore her and want her to be mine. She's always intrigued me, and maybe even sparked a bit of infatuation. She and her magic held enticing mystery, partly because she was reputed to be a magical superpower.
