Chapter 14

Gabe watched Livy as she slept in his arms, marveling at her character. She had the right to be the most bitter person Gabe had ever met. After what she went through as a child, and then with Jacob, there would’ve been no faulting her. If she hadn’t told him about the things that happened to her, he would have never guessed the extent of what happened. Not by the way she treated him.

Instead, she was the sweetest woman he’d ever come in contact with. Considerate, caring, funny, and intelligent were her personal trademark. Now that he knew about her past, he respected her ability to see the good in people even more.

He’d slammed a door in her face, and instead of being angry, she’d responded with understanding. Even finding out he’d kept his identity from her, she was gracious and forgiving, not treating him any different.

It had been nothing to tell her about Rachelle. He was tea in a wide pitcher with as fast as he’d poured his heart out. She’d said nothing while he did it. He didn’t realize how much he’d needed someone to just listen. Not to offer a solution or tell him to let it go.

Livy sighed, pressing her hand against his chest as she slept. He’d held her while she wept horrible heartbreaking cries until she couldn’t cry another tear. When she’d tried to retreat to her room, he’d held on to her. She may have thought it was for her, but it wasn’t.

Never had he felt such a strong desire to protect and shield someone. When he said he’d never let anyone hurt her ever again, he’d meant it. Even if they only remained friends, he’d make sure no one ever said another unkind thing to her or put their hands on her again. He didn’t care what he had to do to keep his word either.

Livy stirred, and her eyes opened. She blinked a few times until her eyes focused. “Oh no, I fell asleep on you.”

When she tried to break away, he shook his head and said, “I don’t mind at all.” He rubbed his thumb along her cheek. The dark circles around her eyes were getting lighter, and he intended to see them gone.

“How long have I been asleep?”

“A few hours.”

Worry lines creased her forehead, and she touched her fingers to her lips. “I’m sorry. I kinda fell apart.”

He pressed his lips to her forehead and held it a moment. “You can fall apart on me anytime.” When he pulled back, her eyes were wide.

“You kissed my forehead.”

“Yes, I did.” It took restraint to just do that. He wanted to kiss her soft lips. “I care about you and wanted to show you, and you deserve to be cared about. And I don’t want you to question whether or not I did it because I felt sorry for you or that I was being nice or any of the other multitude of reasons you could come up with. I
