Chapter Seventeen

I stared at the check on the table. Zac was standing by my side, his hands in his pockets, and I couldn’t tear my eyes off the amount written on it.

“Did you say Jason Drucker gave this to you?”

“He said it’s his gift to me,” I replied, then glanced over my shoulder to look at him. When I first saw the amount last night, I spent the first three minutes that followed laughing because of how outrageous it was.

“This is three times the amount Alexa took from me.”

“Three million dollars,” he said and picked the check up from the table to examine it. “It’s real too,” he concluded after looking at it scrupulously.

“What do we do?”

Zac cleared his throat and handed it over to me. “That’s up to you. Now we know Jason also saw Alexa that night. It makes me suspect that he might know more than he has let on.”

“I called him that night, but I had no idea he was with her too.”

“That makes him a suspect on my list,” Zac said. “We can’t rule anyone out.”

The rest of the morning we stayed in my kitchen, talking about what else he had discovered while away from Garrison.

“I followed a lead on my client’s daughter. She was in contact with another friend from high school back then, and they spoke on the night she went missing. She mentioned she was leaving home for a trip and would return after the weekend. The only problem was that she stopped contacting that friend, and her parents weren’t aware of where she was going.”

“Did this friend mention where she was headed?”

“No,” he replied. “Nothing at all.”

I sighed and combed my fingers through my hair, then picked up the check and slipped it back into the envelope Jason had given me last night. I didn’t want to think about what to do with the money just yet.

“What about my father? Any leads?” I asked.

Zac shook his head again. “Your father’s whereabouts after he returned to Garrison are still unknown. No one has seen or heard from him since he left South Bend. No one even knows if he made it to Garrison alive or not.”

Zac checked the watch on his wrist, then he looked at me again. “I’m meeting with an old friend today,” he said. “I’ll see you after that?”

“Yes,” I answered.

He nodded, turned around, and walked out of the kitchen. After I heard the front door close behind him, I rose to my feet and took the check back to my room. It was my day off from work, so I had the entire day to myself with nothing to do.

The day rolled by slowly, and I took a cab to the town’s local market late that evening to stroll about by myself. The fresh scent of roses and lavender hit my nostrils when I walked past a florist’s shop. Around me were rows of stores, each of them selling unique items in the crowded space.

Cars carefully struggled to drive the middle path, and people strolled both sides.
