CHAPTER FIVE

THE graveside service conducted by an Anglican minister was mercifully short. A visibly weak and wilting Amanda stood between Sienna and Blaine, with Hilary, Marcia and other members of the Kilcullen clan to the right of Blaine. A mixed bag. A professor of physics, a federal senator with his wife and daughter, a supreme court judge and his wife, a prominent Kilcullen pastoralist and his family, and another member of the extended Kilcullen family—a wheat and wine grower from somewhere called the Darling Downs.

Sienna later found out it was a wonderfully fertile district on the western slopes of the Great Dividing Range—the mountain barrier than ran down the eastern seaboard and divided the lush coastline from the rolling central plains of Queensland and, beyond, the true Outback.

On the opposite side of the open grave the mourners were packed. They had come to pay their respects more to the family than poor Mark, Sienna thought, with real sorrow in her heart. She had been experiencing a good deal of torment over Amanda’s out-of-the-blue remark that Mark had been suicidal. There had been something very worrying about Mark. Now she had to wonder. He had not been an experienced skier, and they had begged Mark to stay on the recognized track, but he had taken off in such a strange way—heading into the trees, one of which had caused his death.

She recalled a moment she had almost forgotten, when Mark had told her he was “worthless” and then immediately laughed it off. Had he really thought himself worthless? If so, why? Having met Mark’s family, she couldn’t see any one of them working to strip Mark of all self-esteem. Although she could see how it might have felt walking in his half-brother’s tall shadow.
