CHAPTER EIGHTEEN
Rachelâs limited knowledge of the city once again showed itself when she was surprised to find that the Brooklyn address was leading them right back to the Williamsburg areaâthe same area where Edwin Newkirk had allegedly jumped from the Williamsburg Bridge to end his life. She was starting to get used to the congested traffic and the often maze-like structure of the streets but she still felt anxious and almost discouraged when they finally made it to the address.
It was another typical apartment building, the dingy and generic sort Rachel had seen in countless TV shows and movies featuring New York City: five or six stories with a fire escape along the side, bordered by similar buildings on both sides. Before they got out of the car, Jack pulled up the number of his contact back in DC. If they knocked on the door and their suspect wasnât home any longer, they may have to rely on the guy in DC to help them track the now-moving phone.
When they got out of the car and walked to the front of the building, Rachel noted that the streets were fairly busy. Pedestrians hurried along on the sidewalks, and traffic remained steady on the road. It was nearing noon, though, so she assumed some of this crowd could be the result of people trying to get a jumpstart on lunch breaks.
After climbing the concrete stairs to the front of the building, they discovered that there was no lock on the buildingâs front doors, allowing them to go right inside. The address theyâd been given stated that the man they did not yet have a name for lived in Apartment 401. They took the elevator up, the small metal box scarred and marked up by countless years of abuse. Rachel could feel her muscles tensing, her instincts telling her that they could very well be less than one minute away from their first substantial break in this case.
The elevator stopped and they stepped out into the hallway. The elevator had placed them in the center of the hall, so they walked to the right, toward Apartment 401. They approached as casually as possible and when they came to the door, Jack knocked without so much as a single pause. There was no response of any kind. Rachel leaned closer, her ear less than three inches from the door as she knocked this time. Again, there was nothing from the other side.
âYou sure this is the right place?â she asked.
âThis is the address I was given. I suppose he could have left. Itâs been about half an hour since we got the address.â
âCall your guy and see if he can figure it out.â
Jack did as she asked while they walked back to the elevator. As he spoke to his contact, Rachel kept her eye on the door to Apartment 401 but it was never answered. It did seem a little strange that according to Jackâs bureau contact, the phoneâs owner had been there half an hour ago and now, with the FBI coming to knock on his door, he was gone.
