Sara snuggled close to Hassan and waited. Why would someone break into her room? She never left the doors unlocked. Hassan was tense, and so was Malik. She couldn’t blame them.

Her gaze met Catherine’s, and Catherine shrugged. There wasn’t much they could do until someone told them what was going on.

A knock on the door made them all jump. Malik stood with Catherine in his arms before setting her on her feet. Hassan stood and motioned Catherine to the sofa, then took up a position between the women and the door.

Malik opened the door and Samir, Catherine’s bodyguard, stepped in. Malik closed the door but didn’t lock it, so Sara figured the danger was past.

“Crown Princess Catherine, Lady Sara, Prince Hassan, and my king,” Samir said with a slight bow.

“Dispense with the formalities, Samir. Tell us what happened,” Malik said.

Samir glanced at Sara and Catherine, and Sara hid a smile. The men were always trying to protect them. In a way it was charming, in another annoying.

“Someone broke into Lady Sara’s room.”

“That much we figured out,” Hassan muttered.

“We chased him and ... ” Again Samir’s gaze settled on Sara and Catherine.

“Please tell us, Samir,” Catherine said.

“We cornered him. Before we could question him, he took his own life.”

Catherine let out a little cry, and Sara took her hand. “It’s okay, Catherine.” Catherine hated the thought of anyone taking their own life.

“Any idea of who he was?” Hassan asked, as Malik took Catherine into his arms to comfort her.

“Yes. It was one of Kalif’s men.”

Sara frowned. “This doesn’t make sense,” she said. “Why break into my room?”

Samir raised his hands in the air and then let them drop. “We don’t know. He could have been looking for Hassan’s room, or even Malik’s. We just don’t know.”

“I want to know how he got on the grounds, let alone into Sara’s room, without being seen,” Malik said.

“Prince Khalid is on that right now, sir. We will have answers, but probably not until morning.”

Malik let out a breath. “Understood. Thank you, Samir.”

Samir left the room, and Sara turned her attention to Hassan, who was watching her.

“I’m not leaving you alone tonight,” he told her.

“Hassan, this isn’t the place to discuss it.” She closed her eyes for a moment, then opened them.

“Actually, it’s perfect,” Malik said.

“Malik, let them have some privacy,” Catherine said.

“My room?” Hassan asked.

Sara nodded, rose to her feet, and padded over to where Catherine and Malik stood. “I’m fine. Don’t worry.” She kissed her friend on the cheek before turning to Hassan.

“Tomorrow,” he said to Malik, then, taking her by the arm, led her from Malik’s room and down the hall to his room. Inside his room, he locked the main door and checked the balcony doors.

Hassan crossed back to her and pulled her into a tight embrace. A small shudder ran through his body. “Hassan?” she asked.

“What if we hadn’t heard the noise before you entered your room? What if you’d walked in there, alone?”

The fear in his voice tugged at her heart.
