Chapter 22

Cheryl collected the dishes from the table. ‘I’ll join you guys in a few minutes, if that’s still okay?’

‘Of course.’ Jenny jumped up. ‘Can I help you with those?’

‘Don’t be silly. You’re a local police officer and a paying customer. Marj would have my guts for garters if I let you help.’ Cheryl seemed more relaxed, a smile stirring at the corners of her mouth made her look prettier.

‘Okay, if you’re sure. See you in a sec then.’

Nick rose. ‘I better be heading off. I’ve got a long drive home tonight.’

‘You can crash on the couch at our place if you want.’ Nev offered. ‘Or maybe you have other plans.’ He winked and lifted his near empty schooner toward Jenny. She wanted to kick him under the table but he was too far away.

‘I have a ton of work to get done tomorrow.’ He glanced at his watch as though he were still tossing up the idea of staying in town.

Nev jumped up and headed for the bar, empty jug in hand. ‘Decision made. I’ll get the next round.’

Nick sat back down and whispered in Jenny’s ear, ‘These guys can drink,’ the warmth of his breath tickled her neck, causing her stomach to flutter like a schoolgirl.

‘Med students. They are a special breed.’ She returned the whisper, her lips only a few inches from Nick’s made them both stop. Tim coughed as Nev dropped the jug of beer on the table with a heavy hand.

No one spoke, but they didn’t have any time to consider the mood as Cheryl slid into a chair alongside Nev and the lights dimmed throughout the large restaurant. A spotlight hit the tiny stage at the rear, near where the breakfast buffet usually set up.

The restaurant was nowhere near capacity, but Jenny spotted a few regulars, including Sergeant Mackenzie, Philips and his wife, and Senior Constable O’Connell, all sitting at a table by the stage.

‘Did Marj ever tell you the story about how she came to buy the Motel?’ Nev called across the table as a hush settled on the room. Jenny shook her head. ‘I think you’re about to find out.’ He whispered loud enough for her to hear past Nick whom she noted strategically placed himself between them.

‘Ladies and gentlemen. For one night only, the magnificent, the fabulous, the utterly vivacious, Liza Minelli, Coober Pedy style.’ Stan the barman occupied the spotlight, a beer in hand, his mouth pressed up against the mic stand.

‘It’s her birthday and she’ll party if she wants to. Take it away Marj!’ The spotlight flashed from the barman to the side of the stage where a full-busted woman posed in stiletto heels, top hat and not much else.

Her mic was raised at an angle, her head tilted back, her right hand holding the rim of the hat. As the first words left Marj’s lips and reverberated around the room, the crowd exploded with cheers and wolf whistles.

Jenny was sure this was not the first time Marj had jumped on that little stage, but it was her first appearance since the new constable moved to town.
