Chapter 9: Gossip Girls

Alora

For the next few days, Alora worked from one of Jacey and Luca’s spare bedrooms. Though she missed her office, it was far from a hardship, considering that her youngest sister and her husband lived in a 17,000 square foot Mediterranean-style paradise. It boasted a theater, both indoor and outdoor pools, a bowling alley, a music recording studio, a gym, and a two-story library among other luxurious features. Alora’s Tudor-style mansion in the hills was much smaller — not that her impromptu vacation in their home was about comparing her life to theirs. For the thousandth time in the last year and a half, she was just grateful that her wayward youngest sibling had finally found her path.

“Kinda feels like a bit of a role reversal, doesn’t it?” Jacey’s voice wafted to her from the open bedroom door, which Alora had left ajar for no particular reason.

Alora glanced up from her laptop and smiled. She was perched in the middle of a king-sized guest bed in borrowed gray yoga pants and a black top with spaghetti straps. Her hair was piled in a loose knot atop her head. It was Friday afternoon. Her penciled-in appointment with Pierre Landstrom had come and gone without so much as a phone call from him. In fact, she’d been unable to reach him since the explosion at Greyson’s home.

“You were forever bailing me out in my teen years.” Jacey stepped farther into the room, blue eyes twinkling with mischief. She was wearing a swanky, floor-length sheath, navy with the outline of a few enormous white diamonds streaking their way across her hip-hugging skirt. When she glided to the window to look out over the gated grounds below, a large, V-shaped cut-out bared her creamy golden shoulders. “And now I finally get to repay you by bailing you out for once.”

“I appreciate it.” Alora’s grin widened. “You look amazing, by the way. Have you come to make me change out of these super comfortable yoga pants for dinner? Because I will, if you insist, although it might be accompanied by a little kicking and screaming.”

“It’s your choice.” Her sister tucked a strand of her long blonde hair behind one ear. “I mean, if you wish to remain looking like a hobo when Rhys joins us for dinner, be my guest, but—”

Alora gave a small shriek of alarm and shot out of bed so quickly that she snagged her foot on the duvet and dragged it with her to the floor.

Jacey burst into laughter. “Well, I was trying to decide how much I was going to pry for an update on where things stand between the two of you, but now I don’t need to.” She moved across the room to swing open the door to the walk-in closet Alora hadn’t spent much time browsing through. “I have a little black dress that looks yummy and a teal-colored cocktail dress, if you prefer some color.”

Alora felt a tad dizzy at the thought of seeing Rhys again.
