CHAPTER TEN
Serene
MR. AND MRS. IRA COLDFIELD came in from the library; Ira had put on a lounge coat, and Georgette was in dark-red and black silk, with a high neck and long sleeves. They made a handsome, prosperous-looking couple, without a care in the world.
âGot something left for us there, Ames?â asked Ira. He smiled at Gamadge. âDonât know where he gets his stuff, itâs better than mine.â
Ames was busy pouring from the big glass shaker. âAnd when I mix,â he said, âI always expect company. Here you are, Georgy. Here you both are.â
Georgette put a cigarette into her long ivory holder and Gamadge lighted it. She said to nobody in particular: âI see Jimmie dragged little Smyth in with him. Why in the world?â
âWell, after all, Georgy,â murmured Ames, âit used to be a regular thing.â
âItâs the old man ought to be here,â said Ira crossly. âWe could do without the children.â
âDoctor Smythâs grandchildren,â Ames explained to Gamadge. âThey always had the run of the house,â he added. âWhy not now? Because youâre cross at Grandpapa? Thatâs not at all fair.â
âItâs not at all true, either,â said Georgette. âAs you know.â
âThe boy didnât come,â said Ira, who was getting through his cocktail in gulps. He held out his glass. âThanks, old man.â
âI never did care for the Smyth boy,â said Georgette. âSo rough.â
âWe canât have everything,â laughed Ames. âHe has the brains of the family. Heâd better not go in for private practiceâhis bedside manner wouldnât soothe the patients, Iâm sure.â
âWhatâs that old proverb or whatever it is,â asked Ira, âabout medical students and doctors? I myself always enjoyed talking to that boy.â
âWell, we canât have all the neighbors underfoot now,â said Georgette. âWe have other things to do.â
Gamadge said: âI think Iâve met a friend of yours, Mrs. Coldfield; of you all. Met him at a couple of auctions, but no more than a word or so. He mightnât remember meâhe was busy.â
âWhoâs that?â asked Georgette carelessly.
âWilliam Venner, the Purchaser.â
Ira said: âHe isnât going to purchase anything here, and so I told him.â
âNo indeed,â said Georgette, with a glance at Gamadge. âNot even that malachite table with brass legs in the drawing-room. I hope you saw that period piece, Mr. Gamadge? And the art nouveau floor-lamp with the Tiffany glass shade?â
âI was too busy admiring the gilt and glass tie-backs,â said Gamadge.
âOh, theyâre all rightâthey go back to Grandmother Coldfield,â said Georgette. âBut Bill Venner could have them if he wanted them, and all the rest of her stuff in the attic, to the last moth-eaten Paisley shawl.â
âMoth-eaten?â Ira looked startled. âKeep calm, dearest,â said Georgette. âIâm speaking metaphorically. And Iâm afraid Bill Venner wouldnât have the later bric-Ã -brac as a gift.â
âNobodyâs going to give him a thing,â said Ira. âI wonât have the carpets pulled out from under my feet.â
âThese Coldfields, Mr. Gamadge,â said Georgette. âWhen they canât stand the sight of a thing any longer, do you know what they do with it? They put it away.
