Chapter 21

DIANE AND I LEFT THE MOTEL. Chief Wolf reported the body in the trunk of Del Rio’s car and three patrol cars were there within five minutes. We drove to the marina. As soon as we opened the car door, Walter jumped out and bolted for the boat.

“I think the old boy was ready to go home,” I said.

“Yes, I think maybe he’s had enough adventure for one day,” Diane said.

After feeding Walter and finding his water bowl, Diane drove me to the Hertz rental so I could temporarily replace my car. On the way there, my cell rang again. It was Liliana.

“Cam, we need your help, now.”

“Really? You need my help again?” I said sarcastically.

“As you know, we have Cheyenne. We have to get her out of the country now before it’s too late. If Del Rio finds us, he’ll take her and she will lose her heart.”

“Where are you?”

“I can’t tell you yet. If you will get your airplane ready to fly and call me, we will meet you there. We are trusting that you won’t call the police. It is the best thing for Cheyenne.”

“So, you still want me to fly you to Jamaica?”

“Yes, that is what we want,” she said flatly.

“Can you see how hard this is for me?”

“Yes, I understand how you must feel. That is what we must do though.”

“I’ll call you back in one hour,” I said. “I should have a decision by then.”

“One hour. Please, Cam, think about it.”

I hung up and looked at Diane. She’d heard our conversation.

“What do you think?” I asked.

“It’s a tough decision,” she said. “If we fly into Jamaica, how do we know we’re doing the right thing?”

“And if we choose wrong, will Del Rio get her?”

“There has to be a way,” she said.

I called Chief Wolf and asked her if they’d found Del Rio at the trailer where his car had been parked.

“No, the trailer was empty. It looks like everyone who lived there has moved out. Another dead end.”

I hung up without telling her anything about Liliana’s phone call. To me, that was an indication that I was leaning toward getting Cheyenne out of the country.

Diane looked at me. “I think we’re gonna do it,” she said.

“Not we,” I said. “It’s too dangerous for you to go with me.”

“If it’s too dangerous for me, then it’s too dangerous for you.”

“I’m the one who started this mess and I can finish it by myself,” I said.

“You didn’t start this,” she said. “Ernesto, Liliana, and Del Rio started this.”

“Yes, they did, and now I’m involved. I can’t walk away from Cheyenne. She needs my help.”

“Do you have a plan?” Diane asked. “You’re going to need one. You can’t fly blindly into Jamaica with the head of the cartel, a kidnapped girl and a new girlfriend you don’t know if you can trust or not.”

I thought about that. I could get in a lot of trouble or I could get killed. However, if I didn’t do anything and it went wrong, I would have to live with it.
