Staring straight ahead at the now empty road, Hill turns the volume down on the radio.
I grew up here, Hill says. I don’t know how I would describe that experience. Probably pretty okay for most of the time, it’s just when people start to romanticise things it gets, um. It’s better to be honest if you can. Also I think it’s okay to forget things, like negative experiences that serve no positive purpose in your life. I’d include friends in that.
Hill, Trudy says.
I don’t mean your friends, I’m not passing any comment on them. They haven’t impacted me at all, either positive or negative. I’m talking about my experience.
Stop being like this, Hill thinks.
Trudy looks tired, and for the first time Hill notices small age lines around her eyes. He looks at her lips, her eyelashes, her eyebrows, and all look exactly how Hill would picture them in his head when she’s not around.
Trudy nods her head, one hand on the wheel and the other trying to force a Wrigley’s Extra out of a crumpled packet.
Better driver than me, Hill thinks.
