Chapter Eleven

I was sitting at our kitchen table, anticipating one of my aunt’s soothing teas. I picked at the skin around my half-bitten nails while I waited. The nasty nail-biting habit my aunty hated made my fingers look deformed so I hid my hands in my lap, where she couldn’t see them.

The sweet tea aroma filled the air and decongested my lungs. It would cleanse the house and make me feel comfortable all day.

When I turned to look at the kitchen counter, my aunt wasn’t there.

Even though water and tea boiled in a small pot on the hot plate, I was still seated at the table with an empty cup in front of me.

I focused on the pot.

When I reached out, I couldn’t grab the cup. I was holding a pen in my hand and had just finished writing a new entry in my journal. I tried to read what I’d written, but the words blurred together.

Footsteps sounded from the corridor and I waited for Sally to appear.

I looked up, and the person sitting in my aunt’s usual spot wasn’t her.

“Gareth, what are you doing here?”

He shrugged. “I don’t know. This is your dream.”

I looked around. “I’m dreaming?” Although I could now hear Aunt Sally preparing tea, she still wasn’t near the counter.

The policeman was dressed in his uniform—light blue shirt and navy pants. He even had his hat on, and when he extended his legs out in front of him I noticed the pants were tucked into his boots.

Sierra had mentioned several times that Gareth popped in and out of her dreams. One time it was for a sexy dream. But he’d been possessed by a horny demon then. I’d never thought the constable would visit me.

“Why am I dreaming about my kitchen?”

“I don’t know.” He stared at me. “You were calling out loud and clear. So here I am.”

“I was?”

“Lavie, if something is bothering you or you’re searching for answers, your call can be loud enough for someone like me to hear—”

“I know that,” I said. “It’s what dreamwalkers do.”

Yet they weren’t the only ones who could hear desperate calls.

Even while asleep, I had to be more careful.

“Now that I’m learning more about my abilities, I’m becoming very sensitive to such calls.” He frowned. “Though I think I wasn’t the only one heading your way.”

“Oh.”

I was right. After warning Casey about this type of behavior and what it could attract, I’d made myself vulnerable to all kinds of demonic parasites.

He leaned back in the chair, regarding me. “So, how’s the demon hunting going?”

“What we’re doing feels more like demon chasing.”

“Sierra’s worried about you.”

“Really?” I’d texted and tried calling her a few times, but hadn’t heard back. “Why hasn’t she called me back?”

“She told me you’re not answering your phone. It doesn’t even go to voicemail.”

“Patchy service,” I said. Not sure why I was making up excuses.

“I think it’s more than that.”

“If you’re here with a message, get it out already.” The constable and I weren’t close friends. Burr
