CHAPTER 40
The house was a two-story brick building with a three-thousand square-foot backyard. The front door was shut as were the windows. In its driveway was an SUV. In the thirty minutes Luke and Elise observed the property, they saw no movement.
During that wait, Luke repeatedly checked the address to make sure it matched that on the printed paper. There was no mistakeâthis was indeed Dr. Carl Harkerâs address.
Elise, who was anxious at the start of the stakeout, was now growing bored. âSo, are we gonna wait all day and hope someone shows?â
âForgive me for playing it a little safe,â Luke said. âItâs not typical police procedure to bring a civilian to investigate a possible crime scene.â
Elise stopped herself from asking âWhy not just have someone else investigate?â The answer was clear: Luke didnât trust anyone else on the department and, knowing hospital procedure, he likely didnât get this personal info through legal means.
Luke checked the cylinder on his revolver, then holstered it. Before stepping out, he reached under the car and pulled out a metal case locked with a padlock. He opened it, revealing a Bersa Thunder 380.
âIâm assuming you know how to shoot a pistol,â he said, extending the weapon to her.
Elise took it. âLetâs go to the range right now. Iâll go toe-to-toe with you any day of the week.â She checked the mag and chambered a round, then shot him a glare. âIâve handled more impressive weapons than this little thing.â
âExpress your girl-power to someone that cares,â Luke said. âBesides, itâs loaded with hydra-shock hollow points. If you know anything about guns, you know theyâll do the trick.â Elise bit her lip, checked the bullets in the spare mag, then nodded. Luke stepped out of the vehicle. âStay here.â
âWhat? You expect me to wait?â
âYes. I do. Iâm stupid enough to bring you here, but not stupid enough to have you investigate the house with me.â
âRightâ¦and if someone comes up to the car?â
Luke made a finger pistol, made a âbangâ sound, then slammed the door shut.
He approached the house, cautiously watching the windows, as well as those in the neighboring houses. The next door neighbors seemed to be off to work. There were no vehicles in their driveways. The neighborhood was quiet, typical for the middle of a Monday.
A knock on the front door brought no results.
Luke peered through the living room window. The lights were off. He had to put his face up to the glass for a good look. He could see what appeared to be an entertainment center on the right side. There was no television. However, there were some items scattered on the floor. He recognized a lamp and some picture frames.
Lukeâs hand was on his revolver now. He tried the door. As he figured, it was locked. He moved around the side and hopped the backyard fence. Walking along the back of the house, he spotted a broken window near the kitchen.
âTotally called it.â
He made sure to snap a photo of the window with his phone before scraping away the shards of glass on the frame.
