“Jesus Christ!” He answered the phone.

“We had no Wi-Fi. I just now got all your messages. I have to admit I haven’t read them yet. I decided to call instead.”

He sighed a long, drawn-out sigh into the phone. “What’s happening? Have you found the journal and letters yet?’

“No. That’s like searching for a needle in a haystack at this point. Kate and I have been reading it. I snapped pictures of everything before it disappeared.”

“I’ve been so worried. Have you made any headway?” I envisioned him pacing, the way he always does when he’s on the phone. It was hard for him to sit still.

“We’ve not found Eve Winters. And in the meantime, we were drugged.”

“What?” His voice raised.

“Calm down. We’re okay.” I filled him in on what happened. Then asked if he’d print out the rest of the papers for us. He agreed to do it.

Kate walked back into the room and poured us each more bourbon.

“Are you sitting? I just came back from lunch with my father.”

He gasped. “Whoa…That’s interesting. Have you told your mom?”

My heart spun. “Not yet.” How to tell her? When to tell her?

“Oh boy. I can’t imagine.”

“Right? Listen, could you run a few background checks for me?”

After I gave him the assignment of researching Eve Winters, Lucinda and Woody Lowenstein, he calmed. The worried edge had gone out of his voice, which became softer.

“I miss you,” he said. “How many more days?”

“Seven,” I said. “We've got a week to solve this puzzle.

Kate glanced at me from the chair where she was perched.

Poor Kate. Caught up in all this and she’d just wanted a vacation. She deserved a vacation.

“You don’t have to help me with all this,” I said to her after I finished my call with Den.

“What? Why not?”

“I just want you to have a good time.”

“Are you kidding? Someone tried to shoot you and drugged us. I want to know who and why. And I want to know if it has anything to do with this.” She gestured to the papers. Hedy’s Lamar’s journal and letters played on the table. “I’m having fun.”

“Are you sure?”

“Oh honey, I’m in.”

I smiled at her. She was not just a friend, but a loyal one. I was lucky to have her by my side.

“Alright then, let’s get back to work.,” I grabbed one letter. “Maybe we missed something.”

We spent the next few hours going through the letters and journal entries with a fine-tooth comb. Progress was slow, interrupted by margaritas and pool dips, but our determination to find a clue remained.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, we were both discouraged. The letters contained no information on Eve Winters or the shooting and drugging. We were no closer to solving the mystery.

Kate let out a deep sigh and leaned back in her chair. “What do we do now?” She looked at me with a defeated expression.

I rubbed my temples, trying to rub away the beginnings of a headache. “Let's take a break and revisit it tomorrow with a new perspective.
