Sasha is acting strange. It started in the meadow and quickly became more and more noticeable. Like something was changing with her and I just couldn’t figure it out. Her father’s booming laugh echoes about the house and normally you could hear Sasha’s bell like laughter follow, but this time there is nothing.

“Everything alright, Brutus?” James asks from his chair. He is looking at me strangely with those bright blue eyes that seem to pierce through to my soul.

“Yes, just worried about Sasha,” I reply vaguely.

“That’s good,” he grunts and wheels himself toward the commotion that always follows Thor. “She always deserved a big happy family, and with all of us here with her she gets just what she needs.” He stops and turns slightly to look back at me. “Will you promise me something Brutus?”

I nod and follow until I am standing before him. “Sure James, what is it you need?”

“I know Sasha is a little different now.” He reaches up and grips my hand tightly to pull my attention back to him instead of on the fighting berserker and god in the front lawn. “Will you promise to protect and watch out for her for me when I die?”

I freeze and look over him with a critical gaze, taking in his appearance and trying to find any sign of his impending death. To my untrained eye I can’t find a single thing wrong with him. When I look back into his eyes, I see something darker than what was there before. “Why are you asking me this, James?”

“Sasha is half god, it’s not unreasonable to think she’ll outlive me. After getting shot, all I could think about was Sasha.” He takes a deep breath to calm his nerves. “I want the best for her no matter what and I couldn’t have asked for better men for her. I won’t be able to live quite as long as any of you guys, but knowing that you will be here for her after I’m gone is a weight off of my shoulders.”

“That doesn’t answer my question,” I growl and feel the heat of anger build in my chest. Was James going to leave us? “You’re not leaving. I won’t let you.”

James’ shocked gaze meets mine. “I never said I was going to leave.” Then he chuckles and shakes his head. “Though I can understand your confusion, I was sounding a little strange. I meant when I inevitably pass on like all humans do.”

“Ah.” I nod and feel the tension in my shoulders relax. “Well, Sasha was talking about that earlier as well. I think she’s feeling a little strange herself. Maybe you two should talk about this together?”

James blinks and shoves his shaggy hair from his face before blowing out a large breath. “Damn, you make some good points. Aren’t you like only a month old? How did you get to be so wise?”

I roll my eyes and take the handles of his chair in my grasp to push him further out onto the porch so I can close the door.
