Eve
Eve was comfortable in her new bed, moreso when she found out she was not sleeping in someone elseâs room. It had been a guest room and was now hers and hers alone. The clothing in the closet had been bought for her, courtesy of Lamn, so she would be more comfortable during her transition to the Summer Court. And Lamn had told her he would take her shopping in the town, Avenwhar, the next day.
At first, she slept deeply, with wonderful dreams about intense eyes and purple hair. But somewhere early in the morning, the dreams had become sinister. She woke with a start, and could only remember that she had been running from Rog: first through a fire, then in the forest. There had been blood, lots of blood, and there were fae all around, laughing at her distress. The windows were still dark with night, and she couldnât get her heartbeat to slow down. She was wide awake and knew there would be no more sleep.
She reached for her robe as she got up, and pulled it on over her nightgown. She had no slippers, but the floor wasnât cold.
Maybe a snack will calm my nerves?
The house was dark as she left her room and headed for the staircase. As she wandered down, she tried to remember which way to go to get to the kitchen. She had never been inside a house big enough to get lost in before. She was pretty sure it was to the right, as she left the staircase. She wandered down the hall and knew when she saw the formal dining room she couldnât be far. After two more doors, she finally saw the kitchen ahead.
Entering, she waved her hand over the sconce on the wall; Lamn had shown her how to turn on the lights. She still didnât understand it, but it worked. She went to the fae equivalent of a refrigerator: a cabinet on the outside, that stayed cold⦠somehow⦠on the inside, and pulled out some meat and cheese. She found a breadbox behind her and cut two slices of homemade bread for a sandwich.
She would have to teach Lamn how to make mayonnaise.
From the hallway she heard a sound, like something glass being struck gently to create a tinkling noise, and then nothing. She looked up for a moment, and then went back to her sandwich. A small thumping noise sounded next, followed by another, and then silence.
Eve wondered if Lamn couldnât sleep as well, and thought to invite him to join her for a sandwich and a cup of tea.
Like father, like daughter, right? Too soon?
She headed into the dark hallway and down the hall. She hadnât gone very far when a hand grabbed her mouth tightly, while another grabbed her around the waist from behind. Her body went rigid with panic instantly, the visions of Rog in her dreams still too close to her consciousness. She tried to swing her arms and kick her legs, but the man who had her was like a steel trap.
