When they turned down the driveway Winston pushed Adrian towards the wood shed. “Open the door,” he said to Shaka and she obeyed. “Get in,” he said, this time to Adrian, and he ducked into the dark shed. “Now lock it up,” he said to Shaka and again, she obeyed. When she turned around, Winston was staring at her with hateful eyes and his mouth pulled into a frown. “You disappoint me,” he said. Shaka felt a pang of guilt at his words, but quickly hardened herself to them.

“Well you impress me,” she replied. “Thank you for not killing him.”

“You bring the enemy to my doorstep and won’t even admit who he is. Can’t you see he’s playing you? I hadn’t pegged you for such a dumb girl!”

Shaka’s lip curled at his insult. “Maybe I’m dumb, but you’re definitely unhinged. I mean, only one of us is holding a rifle and yelling about revenge. And if you were able to let that go for one second, would it be so hard to imagine that someone who’s been inside that lab would be disgusted by it and want to shut it down? If he helps us we could just slip in and make all the captives disappear overnight. We wouldn’t need to wage a war.”

“Yes, Shaka, I understand, it would all end in rainbows if he were telling the truth, but what if he’s not? Here’s what we know about him,” he said as he stuck one finger up in the air: “He was once on their side, regardless of whether he is now or not.” He stuck another finger up in the air. “He feigned an attraction to you and lied to you to learn more about your abilities and get closer to me.” He pointed a third finger in the air. “He followed you for days, then tried to confront you alone in the woods. And,” he pointed his fourth finger in the air, “when he found himself at the mercy of a wolf woman, he told you he wanted to help.”

“I know it looks bad –”

“That’s one fucking way to put it.”

“And you might be right. If you are I won’t stand in your way, but we don’t know that for sure yet.”

“You don’t know that for sure, I do.”

“Okay, fine. You don’t have to listen, but I’m going to see what he will tell me.” As she spoke Terry’s truck turned down the driveway. They both looked at it and took a step away from one another. The old truck rolled to a stop with a squeak from the brakes and Terry killed the engine. Then Terry, Whisper and Michal all jumped out.

“Dad!” Michal yelled as he ran toward Winston, his arms giving short, abrupt swings and his belly shifting in his T-shirt.

“Do you want to go to the quarry today?”

“I’ve got work to do, Mikey,” Winston said. Michal’s eyes fell on the rifle in his dad’s hands.

“Can we shoot guns then?” he asked.

“I just told you I’ve got work to do.
