We made a quick pit stop at Arleneâs for coffee and a burger for Dave to keep him from complaining. The Night Merchants headquartered in Auburn Gresham, an area with densely packed residents, high unemployment and listed as one of the worst on the crime index. The gang occasionally drifted into Englewood, but Russo had recently purchased a mid-sized apartment building that housed the majority of his main crew.
âWe got a plan?â Dave asked.
âGet in and out alive.â I turned around in the seat and smiled at him. âAny brilliant ideas how we can do that?â
âLet me do the talking.â Dave chuckled at his own joke. âSeriously, though, weâre in his backyard. Letâs try not to piss him off.â
Good advice, which I might have trouble swallowing. Gio Russo had started my brother down the road of drugs and the thug life. The only thing he had going for him was that he wasnât responsible for Kyleâs death. Dave was waiting for an answer, and I gave him a quick smile that might have looked more like a grimace. âIâve got it under control.â
âPark in the front or back?â Greg asked as we approached the building.
âIn the front. We might have to make a quick getaway. Or if we donât, it will be easier for them to carry the body bags out.â
âJesus, Lang. Itâs my first day back on the job. Did you have to say that?â
Greg parked, and I removed my Glock from the shoulder holster and shoved it in my waistband. A curtain fluttered in an upstairs window. I didnât wait for Greg to come around and open my door. Russo would see that as a sign of weakness. He didnât see me as a woman. He saw me as a cop. I needed to keep it that way.
The door opened before we reached it. Even though the interior was dim, it wasnât hard to see the three heavily armed guards standing by the stairway. I flashed my badge. âDetective Kacy Lang to see Mr. Russo.â
Huge arm muscles rippled as a cell phone rang and the guard jerked it from his pants pocket. âYeah, boss.â He nodded, his dark eyes penetrating and starting a sliver of fear low in my belly. He closed the phone. âSecond floor. You can go up.â
I started for the stairs. Greg and Dave followed, only to be blocked by two of the guards. âBoss says only the woman. You two wait down here.â
I could see the protest on Daveâs lips about to burst forth. The guy he was facing was a mountain of muscle. It would only take one punch to knock them out, if he didnât decide to simply snap their necks.
âItâs okay, guys. I wonât be long.â
Famous last words. I continued up the stairs slowly, getting a feel for the area just in case I had to make a quick exit. The building was old, and nothing Iâd seen so far gave the impression Russo had any intention of sprucing it up. A door was open, and light streamed into the hallway.
