NOAH

The next day rolled out in a fog of paperwork. I tried calling Monroe down to my office but couldn’t get ahold of her until late in the day so we scheduled it for tomorrow. I called the coroner and he said there wasn’t anything additional he could add to the investigation other than the obvious.

Orson Desmond was stabbed to death, the end. Only it wasn’t the end. I know it and the killer knows it. The difference being, the killer is hopeful it’s the end of my investigation. Far from it, my friend. Far from it.

The Evergreen Manor sits tucked behind the street I live on, Country Cottage Road, just a stone’s throw as the crow flies.

It’s a regal-looking estate that was transformed into a hotel a couple of decades ago according to its history. It looks like a mansion ripped right out of the Civil War era with its alabaster columns and grand entry. The dining room is spacious, cluttered with small tables, dark furniture, and dark green décor. Candles flicker in the dim lighting while classical music plays overhead.

The scent of pot roast warms the air and my stomach growls in hopes of eating my fill, and I plan to do just that since it’s listed on the small chalkboard near the entry as the Valentine’s special of the day.

Every last inch of this place oozes romance, but since my date for the night, Naomi Turner, is the manager of the Evergreen Manor, it only makes sense that this is where we’re meeting up. Naomi is Keelie’s twin sister. They’re identical with the exception of Naomi’s dark tresses, which Lottie has told me Naomi gets from a box.

“Noah!” Naomi waves enthusiastically as she speeds my way.

An apprehensive smile twitches on my lips as I take her in with her dark hair falling over her shoulders in neat curls, a red dress that makes her every curve known to the room, and a gleam in her eyes that lets me know she’s going to spend the next few hours making her intentions known.

I certainly hope that’s not about to happen, but I don’t think I can ignore the obvious.

“Noah Fox.” She grabs ahold of my hands and squeezes tight. “We are going to have the best time tonight. You won’t believe what I’ve got planned for you.”

“Dinner,” I’m quick to remind her of the chaste plans I had originally agreed to.

Yes, I am well aware she purchased my time at an auction—and she purchased it for a mint, but that doesn’t change the fact we are simply having dinner.

“Yes, yes,” she purrs as she moves us through the restaurant. “We’ll start off with dinner—then see where the night takes us.”

To my right, I spot a blonde woman canoodling with a dark-haired man—one that I happen to know all too well—and I moan at the sight of them.

They’re seated in the corner, and the way they’re getting frisky, one might assume they think they’re invisible—not surprising since my father has spent decades trying to get away with things by employing the same logic.
