“Apologies again, sir,” Argen repeated to the guard captain as we finally settled down at the tavern for an ale and meal.

Briar remained in her room most of the day, leaving Argen and me to procure supplies. I checked on her numerous times, but she just confirmed her moonblood had come and taken its toll on her. I’d reassured her we would handle everything, and I had food, supplies, and lavender tea with honey sent to her room.

We would depart the following morning, so Argen and I managed to procure all we would need for our journey.

We'd seen the guard captain sporadically throughout the day, and he'd been friendly, but there was something in his rigidity, a tension toward us I didn’t understand. A coldness seeped into me whenever his frosty blue eyes met mine. Plus, he asked about Briar at length, which sent the animal inside me into a possessive frenzy. I was glad Briar had secluded herself in her room. Otherwise, I’d have an angry creature inside me insisting I protect what was mine—except she wasn’t mine. She’d never be mine.

“No apologies necessary so long as you keep from touching my guards.”

“Deal. Never ‘appen again.”

“Excellent.”

“Can ye tell us any news of Lost Lake?”

As he lifted a brow, something dark flashed across the guard captain’s eyes. “What?”

I tried to catch Argen’s eye to tell him to stand down, that something about this conversation was bothering the captain, but Argen didn’t even glance my way.

“Lost Lake. It’s a lake around—”

“I know what it is. What do you want to know?”

“Hear of anyone comin’ and goin’ from there lately?”

“No one comes and goes from there. It’s a forbidden place to venture. So I’d advise you to steer clear of it.”

“Know anythin’ about a flow—”

“Argen,” I hissed. “Let's leave the man be.”

But the captain didn’t miss anything, and the darkness in his eyes edged over his features. “What are you looking for in Lost Lake?”

“A flower of the sun,” Argen supplied, still not understanding the gravity of the situation. Argen was ignorant about reading people's emotions and knowing when to shut up.

I felt a growl rise. “Argen.”

Finally, the dwarf’s eyes flickered to mine, and he must have noted my disgruntled expression.

“A flower of the sun, you say?” The guard captain inquired, his voice low.

“We don’t know what we are looking for. Just a hunch about the flower,” I tried to smooth over.

“Why are you searching for it?” Tension snapped between us as his imploring gaze roamed my features.

I resisted the rise of the beast inside me that wanted to play the cunning predator.

“You’ve heard of it?”

“I didn’t say that,” the captain regarded smoothly.

“Hm.” Thankfully Argen remained silent.

“Why are you looking for it?”

“To break a curse.”

The guard captain glanced away. “There is no flower. No use searching for something that doesn’t exist.”

“Hm.” The guard captain’s quick words and dismissal interested me.

Shortly after that, Argen and I knocked on Briar’s door to discuss what we had procured with her. We decided not to discuss the strange interaction with the guard captain since we didn’t understand it.
