She was worried, and I understood. Something was off about this guy, which was exactly why we needed to go with him. We weren’t safe anywhere until we completed this mission. We needed information, and we needed it soon.

“We really appreciate the ride.” I would play polite if that’s what it took to get information.

“Absolutely. I couldn’t leave you out there. But I’m sorry there isn’t more room.”

“It’s fine.” It was a tight squeeze in the cab of the truck. I insisted on taking the middle, but Janie was pretty much squished right into the door. She clutched the dress box and her backpack for dear life. But I knew compared to other things she’d dealt with since getting involved with the Rangers, uncomfortable seating ranked pretty low.

“It’s no problem at all. I was going right by the Maestro’s place anyway.” Billy, at least that was the name he gave us, drove slowly down the highway. Almost painfully slow. He wanted to make the drive as long as possible, and that had to be for a reason.

“Do you know the Maestros well?” Janie asked.

“Does anyone know them well?” Billy adjusted his hands on the wheel. He was holding it with both hands in an almost robotic way. “Well, maybe you two do, as you are going to visit them.”

“We are more friends of friends.” That seemed like the right answer. I wasn’t actually worried about what I said. Billy, or whatever his name really was, knew far more about us than he was letting on. I wasn’t happy about that, but you took situations as they came and found a way to make them work.

“Who are the mutual friends?” He glanced over at me for a split second before returning his eyes to the road. “Maybe I know them.”

“They aren’t from around here.”

“You aren’t from around here, yet I’ve met you now.” His voice sounded a little different. Higher pitched maybe.

I debated whether to do it, but ultimately I needed to. I made sure I had a clear view of his face before I spoke the name. “Chester.”

His face paled ever so slightly. Unfortunately I had been right. “Chester Port?”

“Yeah. You know him?”

“I’ve met him.” He kept his eyes fixed ahead. He was lying.

“I see. He and I have known each other a long time.” Huge understatement, but I wasn’t as clear on how much Chester had filled this Billy guy in. I tried to accept that it was entirely possible my ex-best friend had sent goons to run me off the road. Did he want me dead? No. He would have known I could handle that sort of situation. He knew my reactions and capabilities better than anyone.

“He’s not from around here.”

“No. But as you said, neither are we. Are you a true local? A transplant?” We knew far too little about Billy, or even the cover he was using.

“I’m from Boston, so not far.” He kept his eyes fixed on the road.

“Beautiful city.” Janie looked down at her lap.
