I woke not long after and found myself in bed next to an enormous black and silver wolf.

The wolf raised his head and looked at me with bright golden eyes. I wondered if he’d been asleep and woken when I did, or if he’d watched over me while I slept.

“Hey, Sean,” I whispered.

The wolf nuzzled my hand, then did the same with my throat. I held still as the wolf’s nose brushed against my skin. I probably should have been scared to have a wolf’s teeth that close to my jugular, but I wasn’t. I knew I had nothing to fear from Sean, either in human or wolf form.

I noticed a chain around the wolf’s neck. From it dangled a small stone carved in the shape of a wolf’s head. I held the stone in my hand. It was warm and somehow comforting.

Something moved at the foot of the bed. A large black-and-white Husky mix dog repositioned himself against my feet. “Hi, Rogue,” I said with a smile.

He made a quiet chuffing sound and wiggled until his back was against my shins, clearly happy to be near me. He was asleep again almost instantly.

I looked back at the wolf. For some reason, I thought he seemed concerned. “I’m all right,” I told the wolf, my voice soft. “Go to sleep.”

He laid his head down, but he didn’t close his eyes. You first, his expression said.

It was very warm under the covers, with a wolf beside me and a large dog curled up against my legs. I stuck one of my feet out from under the bedding so I’d be a little cooler, settled in, and closed my eyes.
