Chapter Seventeen
Nearly a week had passed. Helian and I spent our days flying on Radnorâs back from island to island, our two wyvern hosts flanking him on either side. The islands were beautiful, rich tropical paradises, many with smoking volcanos, fragrant flowers, ancient ruins, and relaxing waterfalls. Helian and I had bathed in almost every waterfall. Radnor had even stopped complaining about having to carry a rodent on his back. He and Demon spent each night together, my rabbit curled up beneath the beastâs mighty wing while Radnor loudly snored. Helian and I had much different nights filled with passion and sweet lovemaking. The wyverns had grown used to Helian climbing between my legs and had taken that as their cue to find a tree further from camp. I couldâve easily gotten used to this life, and not just because of the peace weâd found on this remote island chain, but the feelings Helian had awakened within me, for fool that I was, Iâd let myself fall in love with the Fae prince. Heâd become more than a friend, more than a lover. The more time I spent with him, the more I realized he was my soul mate. He might not have been part of my past, but Helian was my future. I felt it in the marrow of my bones, and I prayed he felt the same way.
Radnor had dropped us off at a beautiful waterfall that ran into a clear pond surrounded by scented flowers. The wyverns and I frolicked in the water while Helian and Radnor set up camp. The wyverns had turned out to be more like dogs than giant winged predators. I wouldâve thought they were my familiars because they understood my commands, but I remembered Zars telling me that familiars would be able to mind-speak with me, and I hadnât heard any of their thoughts. That didnât mean they werenât great companions. Iâd given them names: Beatrix and Beau. Beatrix, or Bea, which meant blessed, with her long, pretty eyelashes, and Beau because he was trying awfully hard to impress Beatrix and become her beau.
Beatrix and Beau had learned quickly to respond to their names, too. Their favorite game was fetch, and they would fetch anything from sticks to stones to bones. I laughed as they raced across the water to catch a stick. Though Beau was smaller and faster, he always slowed down in time to let Beatrix get the stick first. I could tell by the way he looked at her with wide, moon eyes, he had developed a crush. Watching him fawn over her made me smile. She was a lucky girl indeed to have such an attentive companion.
Helian finally came to me, stripping out of his clothes and swimming a few laps before finding me on shore. We wordlessly held hands, looking up at the waning sun. Tonight was to be our last night alone in paradise, for tomorrow evening weâd reach Thesan. He swore when he was almost mowed down by an exuberant Beatrix wielding a big stick in her maw.
