And she was subjected to body searches and to the indignity of a search warrant conducted at the request of Detective Matt Cross of Wallowa County. She had no choice but to allow technician Danielle Moss of the Interpath Laboratory in Pendleton to withdraw her blood and collect her urine. Dick Bobbitt was the deputy who drove her to the lab and then back to jail, so at least she had a friend with her.

But because the lab samples were retrieved the morning after Liysa's arrest, it would be unlikely that an accurate reading could be taken on what she might have ingested or drunk two nights earlier.

Liysa hated being in jail and evinced great concern over her boys, but there was one thing she could be sure of: her friends would stand by her, and so would her father and brother. They all were convinced that Chris had put her through hell. She had told them over and over about his cruelty and his drunkenness.

And they believed her. Confiding in Dick Bobbitt, Tor DeWitt said that Chris had abused Liysa for a long time. He had tried in vain to get her to move in with him. Liysa had refused, saying— as she had to so many others— that Chris would kill her if she ever left him. And then she had told her brother the same thing she told Carrie Arnesen, "Chris would cut me up in little pieces and eat me."
