Overall Treatment Goals

No matter which type of nerve pain you have or where the pain-causing nerve is located, there are several general therapies you need that will get you started on the road to recovery.

• Remove any type of compression on the nerve. Restrict sitting, for instance, if it causes you pudendal-nerve pain.

• Ensure a good blood supply to the nerve (massage, physical therapy, yoga, tai chi, and qigong can all be helpful here).

• Get adequate oxygenation, through deep breathing and/or aerobic exercise.

• Get adequate sleep, allowing the body to heal.

• Reduce stress, which causes an increase in muscle tension, adding to nerve compression, and which also alters the body’s chemistry and increases inflammation, worsening nerve damage.

• Get good nutrition to nourish injured nerves (see “Nourish your nerves and your body” in Chapter 4 for information on special nerve nutrients).

• Engage in a mind–body practice such as meditation, which has proven successful with all types of long-term chronic pain.
