The tension between the two men had not eased much. I was really hoping it would, and now that tension was rubbing off on me. Mostly, I was annoyed with Dalton. He was supposed to be a professional, but for some reason he'd already formed a negative opinion of Cade.
Dalton pulled out a notebook. "If we go with the theory that you were the intended victimâ"
"And it's just that," I interjected. "A theory. After all, Saul doesn't look anything like Cade from behind. He's shorter, squat and doesn't have the same shoulder span." As I listed Saul's description and made special note that his shoulders weren't wide, like Cade's, Dalton looked up from his notebook with an irritated brow raise. "Right, I'll just be a silent bystander, but everything I said is true."
"I'll write that down," he said begrudgingly. "Lack of an impressive shoulder span," he muttered sarcastically.
"Those were not my exact words but whatever." Both men were looking at me now. I tapped my lips to let them know I was finished with the commentary.
"Mr. Rafferty, can you think of anyone who might have a grudge against you?"
Besides you, Mr. Braddock, I thought wryly.
Cade was shaking his head before Dalton even finished asking the question. Then his face popped up. "Well⦠no, he wouldn't do anything like that."
"We're starting from ground zero. Any information will help us at this stage," Dalton said.
Cade adjusted his sunglasses. It seemed he was about to open up a touchy subject. "This place has been in a probate fight for years. The estate was left to my mother, but members of the family contested it. Unfortunately, she died just as the court awarded it to her. It passed to me, and I immediately found myself in another probate fight with my cousin, Jacob Gramby. He lives in California. The judge quickly ruled in my favor. Jacob was very angry. But he wouldn't resort to murder."
Dalton ignored the last comment and wrote down the name. "If you can get me his informationâ"
"No," Cade said a little too forcefully, then softened his stance. "I don't want to start a big family war."
"Mr. Rafferty, I'm going to need to cover all the angles."
"But what if I wasn't the intended victim? Like Scottie saidâSaul and I don't look anything alike."
"If the killer came here with a plan, then the person they were most likely to find on this property was you. How long has Saul been working here on the estate?"
"Just since yesterday," Cade said quietly. It seemed to be dawning on Cade that Dalton was right. This was his property. Why would the killer come looking for Saul on Cade's estate?
The mention of his cousin was interesting new information that Cade hadn't brought up before. I knew there was some sort of legal fight over the property. Rumors about the whole inheritance mess had been swirling around town for years. Could it be that a family feud over the property had pushed someone to murder? But why
