The first time my nose was broken, I was 11 years old doing chores on our Stow, Ohio, farm. I was straddling a wood feed trough and dumping grain beside a steer, who had his head down munching hay in his stall. I weighed about 80 pounds, and was struggling to lower a 5-gallon bucket of water into its holder next to him. When I finally let it go, the noise startled the hell out of him. The steer threw his head up, and the next thing I knew I was lying on my back a few feet away. My brother Joe found me. I bled from my nose a little, but didn’t think much of it. Yet from then on, I got most of my air through my mouth.

In 1984, at age 38, I finally went to see an ear, nose, and throat specialist.

“Your nose is a wreck,” he said after looking at the X-rays.

Turns out my nasal passages were almost completely blocked. I had just 10 percent airflow on one side, 15 percent on the other.

“How did you breathe wearing a mouthpiece?” he asked.

Truth is, I always cut the sides off my mouthpieces so I could get air into my lungs.

The ENT operated. He lifted my nose off my face, bored out the nasal passages, and put my nose back into place. After six weeks of recovery, I took my first unobstructed breath through my nose since 1957.
