CHAPTER NINETEEN
Murray escorted Jessica across the dining room. Jimmy didn’t want to appear disrespectful but couldn’t keep his eyes off her physique. He had always found her so attractive.
Standing in the French door entry, he scanned the room. The room stretched about fifteen feet to his left. To his right, it ran the length of the building, at least 30 or 40 feet. Opposite him, the outside wall of windows looked out over Seventh Avenue.
Down at the far right corner, a band played softly. Tables for four lined the room graced with linen, crystal, china and candles.
Just in front of Jimmy a small wooden dance floor ran across to the windows. The remaining area to his left was set up like a living room. Two couches faced each other, one with its back to the room. On the left wall, two winged-back leather chairs sat at odds with a round table between them. Opposite those, on the window wall were two similar sets of plush chairs and round tables.
Jimmy smiled when he spotted his Dad. The elder Gallagher enjoyed an occasional cigar and so had positioned himself in the last chair by the window. A small fan sat on the sill. Jimmy headed across the dance floor to the VIP area. Murray had stopped off at the first set of two chairs and was introducing Jessica to Chief Scanlon and a few others.
Jimmy left them to it and stepped up to see his Dad. Joseph Gallagher sat with his legs crossed, left ankle over right knee. Police Commissioner Pratt sat to his right. Mr. Gallagher perused a document Pratt had just handed him. Two cigars smoldered in an ashtray between them and a steady line of smoke drifted away to the window.
Jimmy approached and his dad looked up over his reading glasses. He smiled broadly at Jimmy and peeled off the glasses. Jimmy smiled back and put out his hand.
“Hey Pops.” Joseph Gallagher was an average sized man in his mid sixties. Jimmy knew that his Dad kept the extra pounds of midlife away with a steady schedule of exercise but didn’t really diet well. Dad generally ate as he pleased but somehow managed to keep off the gut. Graying only at the temples, he was a smaller, more seasoned version of Jimmy. When he stood, Jimmy could see why people always said the relation was unmistakable, even at a glance.
Jimmy was an only child and it had been ten years since his mom passed away. Since then, both the Gallagher men had thrown themselves into their work. It was shortly after Mom’s death that Dad had decided to start his own business. Through his maturity, dedication and intelligence, Joseph Gallagher left the department as one of the more respected members. And, he left a long line of loyal friends behind –many of whom rose to top spots.
Joseph pinned the arm of his narrow reading glasses to the corner of the document he held in his left hand and reached out for his son.
