I put the box and the toolkit in the car, walked back into the kitchen and glanced at my cell phone. I had thought to call Stan and see if he was free for lunch, but it didn’t look like I’d left myself enough time. I’d have to grab something here and hope to catch up with him after my meeting with Veronica. I had wanted to discuss some of the fades I was using before trying them out in the multimedia room, but it was too late for that now.

Oh well. I headed for the fridge. There was some leftover Conecuh sausage, a couple of different cheeses, olives, and hummus. And there had been a couple of Red Stripes left over, but I was kidding myself there. Beer at lunch was fine if all I had to do in the afternoon was nap. This was not one of those days. I started pulling stuff out of the fridge; Tan and The Black showed some interest in what I was doing. So much so that I nearly tripped over them.

I shooed Tan outside and put some fresh dry food in TB’s bowl. I keep his food and a water bowl up on a small side table. Tan believes that food on the floor, even food in the cat’s dish, is hers. Living with pets is a series of compromises.

I sat down to eat and look at the rest of the paper. After the Shelbyville News had switched to being a morning paper, I’d had to adjust the way I read the paper. That was like twenty years ago, but, still, I’d had to adjust. Anyway, I didn’t read it all in one sitting any more. I broke it up, with the serious sections at lunch—if at all.

I’d finished lunch and cleaned up, not that there was that much to clean up. The leftover food went back into the fridge and the dishes into the dishwasher. It was still too early for my appointment, but if I waited much longer I’d have trouble finding a parking place. I remembered the weight of the box and decided to err on the conservative side.

Before I left I made sure that Tan had plenty of water and gave her a rawhide bone to chew on. She still had one I’d given her last week but she’d lost interest in it. I think they get stale or tired. With everything secure on the home front I set out for the university.

I got there with forty minutes to spare and a parking spot on the front row. I started to get out of the car and then thought better of it. Once spotted standing in the parking lot I’d be a magnet for people coming back from lunch who didn’t really want to go back to work. I picked up my cell phone and scrolled down to Jim Ward’s number. It would probably be a good idea to check in with him. Maybe the paid professional had actually detected something.
