Chapter 7
Hawk
Even with Roseâs warm body in my arms, I still can't believe last night really happened. Finally, after all these years, sheâs mine. Glancing out the window, the position of the sun tells me I slept in longer than usual, but for once, I donât mind. Having extra time with Rose is worth it.
Of course, my anger at what was done to her hasnât faded one bit, though Iâm not going to let that taint this moment. Deciding the best way to wake her up is with kisses, I smile when she begins to stir, my mouth journeying down her collarbone, then her breasts.
"Good morning," she sighs, eyes closed, fingers threading through my hair. I lay my head on her chest, enjoying her caresses and return her greeting. If I was ever given affection, I donât remember it. Perhaps when my mom was alive, but itâs been so long that I canât be sure. My memory of that time has faded. Hesitantly she asks, "You want to talk now?"
I sit up and take her with me, trying not to get distracted as the sheet falls to her waist, but the love bites I gave her are proving to be too much temptation. When I cover her, she giggles, fully aware of the reason why. Once thatâs done, I urge, "Start at the beginning." She explains who Caleb is and that heâs been blunt in letting her know that heâs interested. When I ask how long ago and she admits heâs been messing with her for weeks, Iâm pissed.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"I know how busy youâve been, and I was worried I was overreacting at first. Plus, itâs a face to face conversation, and wellâ¦" Pulling her knees toward her, she wraps her arms around them, as if sheâs hugging herself for reassurance. If I hadnât stayed away from herâ¦
"So he kidnapped you?"
She nods, stating, "I guess he got fed up with me rejecting him. Took the choice from me." At the very least, even believing I was doing the right thing, I shouldâve watched over her better. Rose either feels my inner turmoil or itâs written on my face as she cups my cheek, saying, "It's not your fault. I should have called or texted you immediately."
Placing a kiss in the center of her palm, I correct her, "This is on me." Suggesting she try to rest some more; I stand and grabs my phone out of my jeans. When she wants to know what Iâm doing, I shift, finding that sheâs already settled down again, eyes half-closed. "Calling my team." Heading downstairs, I enter the kitchen, finding myself liking her home more and more. Itâs a small farmhouse with that homey feel that surrounds her.
I skim over the missed calls and texts, opting to just dial Cannon instead. âWhat the fuck, man?â Phoenix demands when he answers. In the background, meaning Phoenix put it on speakerphone, I hear Cannon giving him shit.
"Don't answer my damn phone when I'm right here.
