SEATED AT THE kitchen counter sipping her morning coffee, Em watched her uncle pour a shot of his latest trial batch of Thriller into a small drinking cup attached to the bars of David Letterman’s cage.

At the prospect of another taste, the parrot bobbed his head and did a happy dance. She’d never known anyone who took a job as seriously as her uncle’s fine-feathered taste-tester.

“How’s Kiki doing?” Louie watched Dave dip his beak into the fresh sample.

“Kimo said not good. She’s been lying around the house for forty-eight hours straight, which is about forty-seven hours longer than the old Kiki could have ever stood it.”

Em turned on her notepad and checked her emails as she always did before dressing and heading over to the bar. It was gray and raining off and on as trade showers blew through. She wished she could laze around for another hour or two, but that was impossible.

“Do you think she’ll ever forgive the Estelles?” Louie asked.

“She’s not just mad at them. She’s furious at the whole squad for keeping the monkey’s whereabouts a secret. She feels the Hula Maidens betrayed her, so I suspect she’s deeply hurt.”

Letterman was still drinking and making smacking sounds with his tongue. Usually if he hated a recipe he’d take one sip and squawk, “Yuck! Yuck! Patooie!”

So far this latest version of the Thriller seemed to be going down without a hitch.

“I think he likes it,” Em said.

Louie made a few notations in the thick three-ring binder he called his Booze Bible.

“Now all you have to do is come up with a tall tale to go with the recipe,” Em said. “Then we can introduce it one night next week maybe.”

“Tall tale? All my stories are true.” He winked and then added, “How about we premiere it at the first luau of the season? Maybe we can get the Maidens to come up with a Zombie Headhunter outfit and choreograph a dance to ‘Going Out of My Head.’”

Em tried to imagine what the Maidens would consider proper headhunting attire. The very idea boggled her mind. “Do headhunters wear clothes?”

“Holy moly, I hope so,” Uncle Louie said. “If they don’t, please forget I said anything about asking the gals to dress like one.”

Em looked over at the birdcage and noticed Dave had cleaned out the drink cup and was leaning against the bars with his gaze trained on Louie. His eyes appeared to be unfocused.

“Yo, ho, ho.” His usual enthusiastic squawk came out more like a mumble.

Louie reached for the jigger again, and Dave’s head slowly bobbed up and down.

“Okay, but this is the last one until you sleep these off, Little Buddy.”

Em opened her email inbox and waited for the new mail to download, then immediately clicked on one from Burney Industries.

“I think I’ve finally heard from someone in Buzzy’s family,” she told Louie.

“Good. It’s about time. He’s been sitting in jail for nothing, poor guy. I took him some of Kimo’s wontons yesterday.”

“I hope they didn’t get lost in the system.
