Chapter 16
For the past hour and a half Misa Scott sat in her booth with her head in her hand, nursing her drink. She liked to go to the local bar in her Crown Heights neighborhood for two reasons. The drinks were cheap and the bartender would serve them minus the annoying questions about why such a pretty girl wanted to drink alone.
Seated amongst the handful of drunken patrons scattered throughout the place, she removed her journal from her backpack, flipped past old entries until she found a blank page then the sad faced young woman began writing:
Date: Saturday January 9, 1988 Time: 1:30 am
It’s hard to believe how much can happen in such a short period of time.
In three months I turned eighteen, got dumped by my boyfriend, was raped by my mother’s piece of shit boyfriend, and found out I’m about to be a teenage mother.
But out of all the tragedies going on in my life the thing that hurts the most is that my mother called me a lying tramp when I first told her how I caught her boyfriend Frankie spying on me when I came out of the shower. How could she take that creep’s side over her own daughter? Then again, she hasn’t been the same since Daddy died from cancer.
Drinking, smoking, out to all hours of the night. God, I wish my father was here. What’s she even doing with this asshole? He’s the type of person she would have crossed the street to avoid when Daddy was still alive.
I wanted to tell Grandma but I was afraid to. Frankie said if I told anyone he’d deny it and tell my mother to put me out on my ass. And if ‘Mommy Dearest’ did not believe me when I told her that her man was coming on to her only daughter before, she most definitely would not believe me especially now that I am pregnant.
I felt so depressed and alone, like nobody loved me. Like all was lost. Then one day I was leaving a GYN appointment when I heard all this commotion coming from behind an abandoned building and nosily went to investigate. What I saw changed my life. It was this one guy single-handedly taking on five guys!
Now growing up in Brooklyn, I’ve seen some pretty tough characters before, but there’s no other like this guy. Dressed in all red and unbelievably skillful, he had two large-barreled guns strapped to his sides but never even bothered to use them instead letting his fists do the talking as he cut through the gang like nobody’s business!
After it was over and all the punks were lying on the ground crying for their mommas, the guy in red (which might I add is drop-dead gorgeous) was about to head to his car when he noticed me. It was like he could see into my soul and recognized my pain. I was paralyzed as he came over to me. I had no idea what he was going to do.
