The following afternoon Dan and Mabel arrived at the same time at the gravel parking lot off the highway near Smithson Lake. Craig was already there, prepping his dogs.

When she handed Dan a thermos and a sandwich, he gestured for her to come closer and whispered, “Don’t say nothing about the size of them dogs. He’s a little sensitive.”

Mabel whispered back. “Why dachshunds? I was expecting bloodhounds or something.”

“That’s why he’s sensitive. But his critters can sniff out a deer, boar, badgers, above ground, underground. All good,” Dan said, as he brought her to his friend.

Craig was a tall man with a slight build and messy, sandy hair. He wore forest-patterned camouflage and combat boots and was at least ten years younger than both Dan and Mabel. He responded to Mabel’s cheerful greeting with a serious, silent nod and Mabel could see why these two probably got along so well.

Craig asked Dan, “We looking for bodies?”

“Yep.”

“Fresh or drowned?”

Dan glanced at Mabel, who didn’t know how to answer that. “Planted, I expect. Maybe what? Three to five years?”

Mabel nodded.

“Any clothes or such they can track a scent on?” Craig asked her.

Dan cut in, “Just what God gave us today.” Then he turned to Mabel, hitched up his belt, and said, “Best you go back to the diner and leave it to us men. Craig’s going to be running up and down them woods while I’ll man the main path to keep us on track.”

“Sounds good to me,” Mabel said, happy to leave them to it, handing Craig the last thermos and sandwich.

Craig’s flat expression finally cracked a smile at the gift of food. “That’s mighty Christian of you. Rest assured, if something’s out there, we’ll find it.” Then he turned to his dogs, grasped their long leashes tighter, and shouted, “Killer, Bandit, Badger, Snowball, go, go, go!”

Craig’s pack of barking, small dogs dragged him off into the woods while Dan whooped and chased after them.

Mabel couldn’t help but laugh at the sight. Not having much faith about this whole adventure, she decided to trust Dan and head back home before she went to work.
