Charlotte Sanitarium

At the turn of the twentieth century, Dr. Newark was a well-respected physician of the community. In 1900, based on the rapid expansion of patients in the area, he opened the Charlotte Sanitarium, sometimes referred to as Newark’s Sanitarium.

It was in 1903 when the good doctor’s career was placed on hold and the reputation of the sanitarium and its physicians questioned. It would be one of Eaton County’s most controversial trials. A trial involving a crime so unthinkable, so sinful in this early post-Victorian time it would only be spoken of in whispers or late at night when children were fast asleep.

It was near the end of January 1903. A young man, W. H. Wirtz from Marshall, Michigan, came to Charlotte seeking treatment at Dr. Newark’s sanitarium for Harriet, his young bride of just two weeks.
