CHAPTER 16
Hazel navigated her van into the gravel parking lot in front of a strip mall about halfway between Cooper's Cove and Fort James Harbor. Memories of the last time I came to the pawnshop bubbled up from the recesses of my mind, like a classic movie monster crawling out of a swamp. In an attempt to banish them, I explained the concept of pawning things to Rune for the third time. Rune is the same man who, in one night, mastered how to use the internet and follow recipes to cook an entire meal on an electric stove. How could he fail to grasp the concept of selling items through a pawnshop? It was beyond the grasp of comprehension.
"So ye jes give away yer things to them and they give ye Saint Patrick ha'pennies on the dollar? That's bloody highway robbery! What are they, a bunch of pirates?"
As if to answer his question, a sign over the pawnshop came to life, advertising PIRATE PETE'S PRECIOUS PLUNDERS in bright neon colored in all shades of the rainbow.
Before I could wonder if one of our leprechaun acquaintances would make an appearance, Rune exclaimed, "So they are pirates! We shanât be surprised that nasty little Nagle would deal with men of this caliber. Lasses, this is a right rotten idea. Ye should turn back before ye become victims of whatever scheme they've hatched. I have known a pirate or two in my time, and nothing good has ever come of it."
"They aren't real pirates," Hazel grumbled from the driver seat. She pulled the van into a parking space, leaving an empty row between the vehicle and the building, and killed the engine.
âAnd I suppose ye think theyâre the pirates from yer movie about the lad who neâer grows up?â
I put my hand on his arm. âRune, there are no pirates, not real, not from Disneyâs Peter Pan, or from anywhere else.â
Turning to Rune, Hazel narrowed her eyebrows and ordered, "I'd like you to come inside with us because the types of men who run these shops are less likely to avoid answering our questions if we have a male body present. But you have to be quiet and let us do the talking. Your job is to stand behind us and look intimidating. Got it? Good." And with that, she exited the van and walked toward the building.
âYer friend is right bossy today, lass.â
"I am so sorry, Rune. I've never really seen her like this before. Something is going on, but there's not any time to talk about it now. We need to join her so that we enter the building as a united front. Let's go. "
I didn't give him time to answer but hopped out of the van, leaving him no other choice but to follow. We caught up to Hazel as she reached the front door.
Stepping inside the shop felt like stepping back in time to that scene in the movie Labyrinth, where the main character, Sarah, visits the junk fields.
