Chapter Seventeen

Pasha climbed out of her car with less of her usual vim and pep, her movements careful and deliberate. When she looked at us, it was like the way a boss might look at an employee — an employee they weren’t particularly happy with.

“Hi!” I said brightly, keen to show that we were pleased to see her.

“Good afternoon.”

There was something about her tone I didn’t like. Something ominous.

Pasha stood with her back to her car and eyed us carefully.

“Is everything okay?” I asked, my cheeriness fading with every moment Pasha refused to engage.

Our client tossed her hair. It was not a promising gesture. “I had a conversation with Sebastian just now. My first one in a couple of weeks. He wasn’t pleased.” She waited a moment for her words to sink in before she hit us with the follow-up. “Did you go over to his house?”

Busted.

“We did,” I confirmed. “But he wasn’t home.”

Pasha nodded to herself. “That’s what he said as well.”

“Pasha, there’s something you need to know. Something we found out. It’s about Sebastian and Robert.”

Ian walked toward her, sheltering the screen of his phone from the sun with his hand. Pasha squinted at the device. “I can’t see what it is you’re trying to show me. What is it?”

“I’m afraid to say, Pasha, that we think Sebastian was planning to sell the company before Robert even died. He signed an agreement.”

“What do you mean he signed an agreement? How could he?”

“I don’t know how the business was structured, but from what we’ve seen, it looked like Sebastian had the authority to sell the business. Didn’t you say before that they never even drew up a proper partnership agreement?”

Pasha was silent for a moment, biting her lip, and slowly shaking her head. “I don’t understand. Sebastian? I don’t think he had anything to do with what happened to Robert.”

“Nevertheless, we have evidence that he planned to rip Robert off, at the very least.”

“And,” Ian continued for me, “that would give him a very good financial incentive for not wanting Robert to be around anymore.”

Pasha slowly shook her head again in disbelief. “I can’t believe that. I can’t believe any of it. No, it can’t be. Sebastian wouldn’t do something like that. He was Robert’s friend.”

Pasha wouldn’t be the first person I’d seen in disbelief when a criminal was revealed. It happened as a regular occurrence in my line of work.

“That’s what the evidence is showing. I told Benson as well, and he’s going to reopen—”

“You told Benson?” Pasha said, interrupting. “How could you tell him? He’s your chief suspect, isn’t he?”

“Afraid not. He was out of town when Robert went missing, and he’s got evidence to prove it. He was helping his sister Dolly move to Reno.”

“But…” Pasha shook her head sharply again. “Well, we’ll get to the bottom of this.” She tossed her car keys into the air and then snatched them before they could fall. “Let’s go and sort this out.”

“What do you mean, sort it out?”

“We’re going over to Sebastian’s right now.
