Later that night, Ellie met Starla at the Chinese restaurant. The main dining room was relaxing with low lights, dark red walls, and wood accents. Artwork depicting landscapes in China added to the mood along with the Asian music … and it was one of the best restaurants around town. The place wasn’t crowded, but they decided to get a more private booth so they could talk.

Ellie said, “I went to see Kandy at Jay Ray’s today. Apparently, he and Lucky had spent a lot of time together. Kandy also told me that Lucky and Mavia were running around on each other. I don’t know where to start,” she said unfolding her napkin.

Starla opened the menu. “Well, you saw Doc Cohen’s mom knock the popcorn out of Lucky’s hands. Then Ms. Thatcher said that Victoria Cohen was a ‘loose’ woman. Do you think Victoria could have been running around with Lucky?”

“At this point, anything is possible. I think I need to speak with Victoria. Do you know anything about her?” she asked.

“Well, she’s a bit feisty. She does have a lot of gentleman friends that she comes into the shop with. Most of the men she seems to travel with are widowers who are well-to-do. She seems to like the attention and gifts they lavish on her. She’ll often come in after being at the nail shop with one of her gentleman friends. I saw her in there one day when I was having my nails done, and she convinced the guy who was paying for her nails to get a pedicure. She’s a lot of fun to be around. She’s just so funny and outgoing. That old guy was having the time of his life with her. She also gets a lot of new jewelry from her special friends. She doesn’t brag about it, but I’ve asked her about new pieces and she tells me one of her friends gave it to her.”

Ellie’s eyes got wider. “She sounds like a very interesting lady.”

“She is actually. She told me she was a model in her younger days. I overheard the women in the Lilac group say Victoria stole her friend’s boyfriend. There’s a lot of drama in that retirement village.”

“Wow, who knew the senior citizens in the town were having so much fun.” Ellie laughed.

Not long after they ordered their food was delivered to the table. Ellie’s stomach growled when she smelled the egg rolls, steamed dumplings, and sesame chicken. Usually, Stella came with them, and Ellie felt bad about keeping her out of the investigation.

Starla said that she’d invited Stella to come along. “She’s been working a lot with Dad on some of his antique projects and she just hasn’t had a lot of time. They don’t involve me because I don’t like doing all the money stuff. I’m the creative one.” Starla smiled. “So I want to hear more about Austen.”

“I went to his house the other night and he cooked for me. I was impressed. The food was really healthy, maybe a little too healthy for me,” she kidded.
