On Friday the cast discussed the script with the producer and outside shots were taken.

Wilfrid Brambell and I sometimes had forty pages of script to memorise – not just a matter of having a photographic memory to repeat the words like a parrot. Every word had its own meaning – the right emphasis has to be placed on it.

The Wednesday run-through with the cast present ironed out all the faults. Time after time we’d go through the script until every word was spoken at the right moment.

Thursday was the day the show was recorded on tape.

We’d have at least four run-throughs before everyone was satisfied.

The resulting sketch always looked so life-like. Harold or old man Steptoe would seem to casually appear at the door with all the time in the world at their disposal.

In reality it was like an obstacle race – jumping over cables – dodging the crews – to appear at another part of the set seconds later.

Once I slammed the door a little too hard as I entered the ‘House’. The set shook with the vibration, and I was knocked to my knees by a blow to the shoulder.

I looked around for the culprit. On the floor lay the head of a fox. It had fallen from the wall when I had slammed the door.

Even when you’re eating, talking to friends, or driving a car, one section of the mind is busy with the words of the next script.34
