A soft ringing filled Rouge’s ears, and she groaned. ::That was my timer. I have to go, or I won’t have time for my daily survey.:: Quickly, she accepted the quest, hoping Motte and Aspen had received matching ones.

Motte chuckled. ::Go on, then. I’ll be here until you get back. Aspen says Doom isn’t likely to make it before we get to Bloodhaven, so it’s just you and me. Be careful on the bus, and eat some salad with your meatloaf.::

::Daaaad!::

When the platform lifted Zoey out of her pod, Sara was waiting, but there was no sign of Dr. Joe. Sara gave her a hand out, and she rushed over to the shower. Zoey slapped the button, then rubbed the goo off her body in the ensuing tsunami. When she finished and pressed the button again, Dr. Joe was there to hand her the Super Towel.

He smiled tiredly. “It looked like you had a good session. Your heart rate picked up early on; find a battle?”

She nodded, pulling the rubber cap off her curls and then starting to pat herself dry. She’d long since gotten over being embarrassed about wearing the skin-tight bodysuit around Dr. Joe and Sara, and they all had this down to a smooth, impersonal process. “Yeah. It was gross, though. Demonic rodents. Somebody has a twisted sense of humor.”

If she hadn’t been watching him from the corner of her eye, she wouldn’t have caught the look of shock that touched his face for a brief moment.

“Demonic?”

She handed the towel to Sara with a smile, then turned back to glare at Dr. Joe with her fists planted firmly on her slim hips. “Come on, Dr. Joe. There’s no way you’re not in on all this. You know all about the Demonic things and the Vampires, right?”

He frowned slightly, and his eyes flicked briefly toward the nearly invisible door beyond which Bree Stephenson laid in ovoid comfort. “No, in fact, I don’t. I’m R&D. If you want to know what changes are coming up in game, you need to talk to Bridget or one of the other programmers. It’s against company policy to give anyone inside information about upcoming events, though, so I doubt you’ll have any luck.”

Expression smoothing into professional calmness, he pulled up his screen and stared at it, tapping a line with his stylus. “Now, how did you do with the interface? Any changes that you noticed? Did you feel that it was as immersive as the last time you logged on here?”

She growled a little internally, but forced herself to respond with her usual enthusiasm. After all, it wasn’t Dr. Joe’s fault that he couldn’t help her. Honestly, even if he could, she’d feel bad about asking, since it could give her an unfair advantage in the game. Still, it would be nice to get some benefit from working for the developer of the game, just once.

It only took ten minutes for her to answer all the questions they had for her. It wasn’t hard, after all, since she hadn’t noticed anything different.
