CHAPTER ELEVEN

Thursday, 12:30 a.m.

Her head was spinning. In addition to the mysterious list and the news about Sheila Stanton and Gary, now a suspicious watcher merited consideration. Was that somehow also related to Gary and this mess? It was really just too much to process.

And it had been seven and a half hours since they’d taken Adie. A lifetime to a child. A horribly long time to be frightened or hurt.

She felt the BLT in her stomach rumble. She pressed her hands to her midsection.

“What’s wrong?” Bray asked.

The man saw everything. Thought of everything. He’d been that way when he was young, too. That was why when he’d come home from the Marines, she’d barely given him any explanation. She’d known that he’d see through her lies if given half a chance.

“Nothing different,” she said, hoping he’d let it go.

He gave her a long look but didn’t press it. He punched the address for the next location into the GPS and they took off. “Has Gary dated anyone else besides Sheila since your divorce?”

It was a logical question. He was methodically thinking of all possible leads. Still, it was awkward talking about Gary to Bray. “A couple of times that the kids were there, Maggie Reynolds joined them for dinner. She worked at the library. I think Keagan understood that his dad was dating but Adie didn’t get it. I don’t think it worked out because they haven’t mentioned seeing Maggie for at least six months. Plus, I’ve seen Maggie with Porter Gates several times. He owns the gas station at the edge of town. The one you used to work at.”

“I know Porter. We both started at the station on the same day. Odd to think that could be me.”

“What?” she asked.

“When I got back to Ravesville, if things had been different, maybe I’d have gotten my old job back at the station. In time, maybe I’d have decided to buy it.”

She couldn’t see Bray doing that. She’d always known that he was destined for bigger and better things than Ravesville. And even at eighteen, she’d worried that she was holding him back because she’d known that she couldn’t leave her mom. Maybe it was another reason why she’d ultimately agreed to The Plan. That was what she’d coined what Gary, her mother and she had come up with that long-ago night. The Plan.

It made it seem less half-baked, less crazy. Less wrong.

They rode in silence for another five minutes. Then Bray turned to look at her. “If it’s not a jilted lover from Gary’s past who might want to do him harm, is there anybody that you might have been seeing who would still consider him competition?”

She could feel heat in her face and was grateful that the car was dark with the exception of the dimly lit dashboard. Could she be as blunt with him as she’d been with Trish? Why not? “I’m divorced with two kids, a mortgage and a business loan. I’m not a great catch.
