CHAPTER EIGHT

Jana couldn’t believe Eric Patterson had stood her up. She had waited in the lobby of her motel from five minutes before seven until seven thirty and the reporter never showed. By that time she had read every brochure in the tourist-information rack by the door and played fourteen games of solitaire on her phone. He hadn’t even had the decency to call and cancel. What had Jenny seen in the guy?

Starving and furious, she drove to a sandwich shop and placed an order to go, then took it to Jenny’s apartment. If Eric did decide to finally show up at the motel, she was in no mood to talk to him. She called Jenny’s roommate, April, from the parking lot. “I’m sorry to bother you,” Jana said. “But would it be okay if I came up for a while?”

“Uh, sure,” April said, sounding very unsure. “I have to leave in a little bit to meet a friend for drinks, but you still have a key, right?”

“I do. And thanks. I promise I’ll be gone by the time you get home.”

She followed April into the apartment and sat in a chair while April settled on the couch. She was a petite Asian American with short black hair streaked with purple. “Any word on how the search is going?” April asked.

“Nothing yet.” She started to tell April about Alicia Mendoza’s body being found, but why put worry about a connection between the missing Guatemalan woman and Jenny in April’s head if it wasn’t already there? “I know the Rangers are working hard to find her,” she said, instead.

“They’re bound to turn up something soon, right?” April said.

“April, did Jenny seem upset about anything in the days before she disappeared?” Jana asked.

“The cops asked me the same thing. But, no, Jenny wasn’t upset.” She smoothed her hands down her thighs. “We didn’t really see each other that much, you know. We were both really busy with work and studies and stuff.”

“Did you know Jenny was dating two different guys?” Jana asked.

“I knew she had a pretty active social life, but she didn’t talk about her dates, much. Well, except I knew Eric. He was over here pretty often.”

“Did you know he and Jenny were engaged?”

“He told me one day when he came to pick up Jenny, while she was in the bathroom getting ready. But he said it had to be a secret until they had a chance to tell you.”

“Were you surprised?” Jana asked.

April wrinkled her nose. “A little. I mean, I didn’t really think Jenny was that into him. I was going to ask her about it the next time we were alone, but I never got the chance.”

There were so many things Jana wanted to ask her sister, too. The thought of never having that opportunity was a constant dull ache in the pit of her stomach.

April stood. “I have to go now. But you can hang out as long as you like.”

“Thanks,” Jana said. “Sometimes it helps being here, where I feel a little closer to her.
