Youâll never prevent all chaos.
But you can learn to find your calm in any chaos.
I purposefully chose to station myself in the large panoramic glass boardroom that looked out on the office floor. People stood around their desks â still wearing their multi-layered paintball outfits â in anticipation of further instruction. I knew people would be speculating, whispering and concerned. I figured if they could see me and I was maintaining a calm demeanour, it would help to eliminate some of their potential anxiety. As the emails, calls and cancellations rolled in from our clients, and our hard-earned partnerships disintegrated one by one, the boardroom began to feel more and more like a bunker. I was just 22 years old and I was in the middle of a potentially fatal shitstorm, trying to navigate my way through one of those rare bouts of unexpected chaos that life just canât prepare you for.
I knew my team had just lost the majority of their clients, that our investor would potentially pull out, and that we werenât in a healthy enough financial position to survive this. I didnât even know if the attack had ended but whoever had done this to us would be ecstatic at the damage they had caused.
But honestly, I didnât feel sorry for myself; I wasnât angry and I wasnât worried. Unexpected chaos and bad news had been a recurring part of my life for many years â as the CEO of a rapidly growing company, that is quite frankly unavoidable. I couldnât âprepareâ for it, but through my combination of nature, nurture and experience, I naturally always turn to logic, reason and rational thinking in moments of chaos.
In these moments, thereâs something inside me that automatically becomes totally unemotional, incredibly focused and relentlessly fixated on solving the problem at hand. Nothing else matters, and I will not entertain anything other than rational solutions from rational people. Deep down, almost innately, I think I realise that anger, self-pity and other potent emotions are nothing more than a distraction from solving the problem. They are not my friends; they will interfere with my ability to think clearly and, in professional moments like these, I do not allow them access to the cockpit. In moments of chaos like this, when emotions go up, intelligence goes down. Evidently, I respond much more effectively when you attack my company than I do when a random message from a relative stranger reveals something about a girl I hardly knew that attacks my self-esteem and ego!
Realising that the harsh barrage of emails, calls and messages was not going to end any time soon and that I couldnât keep my team waiting much longer, I made another company-wide announcement in which I optimistically shared the progress we had made on the situation, what I was going to do next to
