I got my $13,000 piece of paper and went back to the brothel, back to my home, back to my fellow weirdos and misfits. I was certain that I belonged there now. I had seen normality and I wanted no part of it.

The diploma still sits on top of my wardrobe, gathering dust. I like to tell people, ‘You know, I studied to be a paramedic once . . .’ while hoping no-one ever has a medical emergency in front of me because I can’t remember how to do CPR.
