I clutched the book to my chest. A real signed copy! I stood up, went inside and headed straight up to my room. I threw myself on the bed and looked at that title page. I flipped through the book, looked back at the page, flipped and looked back, over and over.

Finally, I decided to read another story. I chose one I didn’t know, called “The Little Match Girl.” It was shorter than most of the others. It was also different — I mean really different. At the end, my eyes were so full of tears I couldn’t see the words on the page anymore. I had never cried over a story before.

“The Steadfast Tin Soldier” had been sad, too, but not like this. For one thing, it wasn’t about a real person but a toy soldier and a paper cutout. But this story made me feel more than sad. It was — well, it was devastating. That was the only word for it. And then after a while, lying there on my bed, it made me feel something else. It made me feel angry.

How could HCA write a story like that? How could he be so mean to the little match girl? I just couldn’t understand it. I had to get out my feelings somehow, so I went to my desk and set out a piece of paper and stared at it awhile.

And then I began to write.
