By the time Rickard came home, she had put the memory of Peter into the computer. He looked at her uneasily.

“Anna, how pale you are.”

“You read it while I get dinner.”

She had already bought and cooked a piece of salted beef brisket that afternoon. She peeled rutabagas, potatoes, and carrots, cut them up into small pieces, boiled them, and mashed in the stock.

He liked mashed rutabagas.

He was dark-eyed and pale when he came out into the kitchen. They didn’t have the strength to talk as they ate, but afterward, in the living room, he said, “I often think about Peter, that it was as if he had a mission. For that was when things went … as they did. Between us, I mean.”

She couldn’t bring herself to reply.
