A blood-curdling scream echoed through the stone walls of the castle, startling Quinn awake. He jumped to his feet. This wasn’t a scream from the servants; Quinn already knew how their loops went, line by line. This sounded like a serious threat to his home.

Since when did I start thinking of this place as home? he thought as he bounded down the main stairs, taking them three at time. An incredible roar nearly knocked him off his feet as he was halfway to the door, the sound shaking the paintings on the walls and making the crystal chandeliers rock in their moorings.

Quinn raced down the rest of the stairways and breath caught when he saw Mirror lying in the entryway, her beautiful eyes circled with bruises, her normally-rosy cheeks pale with fear. A large cut on her forehead was bleeding heavily, despite Mrs. Ladium’s efforts to clean it with a white cloth.

“Who did this to you?” Sophie roared, the dark sound coming from deep within her chest.

Mirror’s voice was faint and filled with pain. “I j-just was in town picking up our weekly order.” A tear slowly cut a trail down her bloodied face. “There was this group of townspeople there, all riled up.” She cast her eyes downward. “Quinn, your mother was leading them.”

“What? She did this to you?” Quinn’s throat was so tight he barely got the words out.

“Not exactly.” Mirror waved Mrs. Ladium off and struggled to her feet. “Your mom apparently started a rumor I kidnapped you for my mistress. Everybody knows how much she depended on you.” She paused. “Took advantage of you is more like it.”

Sophie exhaled loudly and seemed to shrink. “This is all my fault.” Her eyes blazed. “If I hadn’t gotten everyone cursed—”

“This isn’t your fault.” Quinn’s hand found Sophie’s automatically. He wound his fingers through hers and she leaned towards him, accepting his comfort.

“They asked me to bring them to the castle so they could...well...” Mirror gestured to her cuts and bruises. “I couldn’t betray you.” Her hands were trembling. “Sophie, I don’t think they’re going to stop until they’ve found you.”

“They won’t have to find me.” Sophie stalked towards the door. “Chad! My horse!” The stable hand disappeared faster than Quinn would have thought possible.

“I’m coming with you.” Quinn’s pulse raced as he sprinted behind Sophie. “My mother started all this; I have to help fix it.”

“I won’t let you slow me down,” Sophie hissed. “This needs to be dealt with now.”
